4 Fears Blocking You From Reaching Your Full Potential
I’m sure you’ve heard the quote, “Fear kills more dreams than failure ever will.” But have you ever thought about how it specifically applies to you? I know many of us like to put on a mask to pretend we’re fearless, but at one point or another, fear has likely altered our course of action. And it’s only when you identify and accept your fears can you start to overcome them. So, let’s look at what four different types of fears look like when it comes to your career.
Fear of Failure
Have you been avoiding stretch assignments simply because you “might not perform as well as you’d like?” Often driven by perfectionism, fear of failure forces you to stay small because big risks could potentially result in you “being exposed.” Rather than viewing failure as embarrassing, understand that it is inevitable as it’s a part of the learning process.
Fear of Rejection
Have you been avoiding applying for roles you really want because you “don’t think you’re 100% qualified?” Often driven by an attempt to avoid feelings of shame and regret, fear of rejection stuns your professional growth, keeping you in lower-level positions rather than progressing as you should. While I haven’t found a cure that makes rejection pain-free, I have found that facing this fear head-on builds resilience.
Fear of Change
Have you been settling for a job you’ve grown to despise just because you do the role well? Often driven by a desire for control, fear of change is why comfort zones exist. Recognizing that change is inevitable and works much better when you change on your own terms is the first step to moving beyond your comfort zone and doing great things.
Fear of Success
Do you ever find yourself not wanting to move up to the next level because you don’t think you have what it takes to sustain it? Often driven by self-doubt, fear of success causes many professionals to self-sabotage. Rather than asking yourself, “Do I really have what it takes?” ask yourself, “Am I ready to give it my best shot?” As long as your answer to the second question is “yes,” you’ll put yourself in a position to pursue success comfortably.
