5 Reasons to Consider a Career Change
Reading Time: 5 minutes
Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard some reference to "The Great Resignation" or "The Big Quit." People across all industries are leaving their current jobs to pursue other opportunities for reasons ranging from more flexibility to more money to more peace. If you've found yourself wondering if a career change is right for you, you're in the right place!
While there are many reasons to consider a career change, below are 5 of the most common I've seen, along with some additional considerations for each. Keep in mind, the goal is not to change for the sake of changing but changing in pursuit of greater fulfillment.
1. YOU ARE SIMPLY UNHAPPY WITH YOUR CURRENT JOB.
I get it. No one wants to be unhappy for 40+ hours a week. If you find yourself in this position, It's important to make sure you're clear on why you're unhappy to avoid the never-ending job hunt to satisfy an "unknown." Although this is the most common response, I often find that the unhappiness actually stems from reasons 2-5 below when questioned further.
2. A LIFE CHANGE HAS SHIFTED YOUR PRIORITIES.
Changes happen, and sometimes your job doesn't fall in line. Maybe you were once able to work 80 hours/week and travel M-Th, but now you have a family and need something a bit less aggressive. In this case, you want to clearly identify your priorities to ensure your next move works with your new lifestyle!
3. YOUR CURRENT CAREER DOESN'T ALIGN WITH YOUR CORE VALUES.
This happens in several ways: (a) the nature of your job has shifted, (b) your core values have shifted [which often happens with growth], (c) it never aligned, but you needed a job and didn't expect to stay there long. However it happened, it's great that you recognize it now! As you begin your job hunt, be clear on your core values, search for positions that align, and ask lots of questions - early & often.
4. YOU DON'T FEEL CHALLENGED AT YOUR CURRENT JOB.
Sometimes we outgrow jobs, and that's fine! Not all positions have clear advancement paths, which means that you may have to create your own - inside or outside your current company. Either way, be clear on the type of challenge you're looking for so your next job fits the bill.
5. YOUR CURRENT JOB WON'T PAY WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING TO MAKE.
Although many will recommend that you not "chase money," the truth is, sometimes you just can't make what you're looking to make at certain jobs. You deserve to do meaningful work AND be well-compensated. My recommendation is to make sure you don't fall into reasons 1-4 making a change based on pay alone.
