Questions To Ask Yourself As Your Approach Your Job Search
So you're ready to start actively applying for new roles... Congratulations! Before you just start blindly applying, it's important to have a strategy as you approach your job search. Let's face it - simply applying to every position you find based on a "job title + location" search on LinkedIn is NOT a strategy.
Here are several questions you should ask yourself as you're applying to ensure you're on the right track:
Does this job fit into your long-term career plan?
This question helps you carefully consider your career alignment. Rather than working odd jobs here and there, you should actively seek positions that put you closer to your ideal position five years from now. If it's not in alignment, don't waste your time!
How do you measure up to the requirements?
This question helps you carefully consider whether the role makes sense for you at this time or not. If the requirements look like a foreign language to you, chances are it's not the role for you. On the flip side of that, if you meet all of the requirements (and then some), chances are you're overqualified and should pursue a position that stretches you a bit more.
Do you know anyone who works at the company who can potentially refer you?
This question helps you to carefully consider alternatives to simply relying on job board submissions. On average, Corporate positions receive submissions north of 200 per job posting. Referrals are the easiest way to stand out from the crowd.
Does your online presence support your professional brand?
This question helps you carefully consider the first impression the employer may have of you. You're only fooling yourself if you think the employer is not heading to Google to see what digital footprint they can find for you. Do yourself a favor and make sure whatever exists is something you wouldn't mind your future boss seeing.
