Discover How These 4 Valuable Assets Lead to Career Advancement

People often ask me, “What does it take to advance my career?” Contrary to popular belief, it takes more than simply being “good at what you do.” Career advancement requires a structured strategy. While the exact recipe for career advancement depends on your unique scenario, I've found that the following four assets are fundamental to your success.

Documented Goals

It’s not enough to simply “know what you want” - it’s important to write out your immediate and long-term goals. A study completed at Dominican University found when you write down a goal, you’re 42% more likely to achieve it! When you think about other areas in your life where you make lists, such as grocery shopping, it makes sense. You’re not only keeping yourself accountable but making sure nothing is forgotten. 

Pro tip: You can further increase the chances of reaching your goal by checking in weekly or monthly with an accountability partner. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Tailored Resume(s) 

I say this all the time, but I’m going to say it again - a one-size-fits-all resume is not going to get the job done. Especially if you're looking to transition into a new company, you must put your best foot forward - your resume basically gives your first impression. What’s more, a tailored resume not only highlights your skills and experience but lets the company know why you are the best candidate for the vacant position. 

A few tips for tailoring your resume:

  • Review the posted job description. 

  • Then, adjust the bullet points on your resume to align with those “must-haves” from the posting. 

  • Rearrange your skills sections to highlight those that the company views as ideal.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Keyword-Optimized LinkedIn

If you want your LinkedIn actively working on your behalf, make it easy for recruiters to find you by ensuring your page is keyword optimized. First, consider the skills, certifications, expertise level, and even portions of the job description for the career you have in mind. See if you notice a pattern or if a phrase keeps popping up, then select four or five keywords that relate to you. Finally, include these keywords in your experience and skills sections, summary, and even your headline. Remember to consider how a recruiter from the company you want to attract will search for you and craft your descriptions to hit those terms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A Strong Network

Your network is your net worth! Ok, maybe not exactly, BUT there's so much power in connecting with the right people. Sometimes they open your mind to new possibilities, and sometimes they go as far as opening the door. Many jobs are filled through personal or professional connections. Outside of referrals, having a strong professional network builds your social well-being and your professional confidence. Since they know your goals, they can give you that push and encouragement to dream big. Plus, engaging with professionals from a range of experience levels allows opportunities for mentorship, both as the mentor and the mentee.
